The heroine of our story, 12-year-old Misaki Suzuhara left her home in Wakayama, traveling to the vast city of Tokyo to come and live with her aunt Shoko. After getting off at the wrong train station, Misaki caught her first glimpse of what would later become her biggest passion, Angelic Layer. Instantly captivated by what she saw unfolding on the big screen, with the help of the often misunderstood scientist Icchan, Misaki prepares to enter the world of Angelic Layer with her own Angel, who she named Hikaru.
Misaki is a kind and cheerful person who tends to make new friends easily. Bright and honest, though sometimes a bit spacey, Misaki has an inferiority complex about her small stature. And while she's not very athletic, Misaki has excellent eyesight and a keen sense of strategy that helps her succeed during Angelic Layer bouts. Misaki attends Eriol Academy as a 7th Grader, along with her good friends Tamayo and Kotaro.

A kindergartener at Eriol Academy and Kotaro's little sister, Misaki first encountered Hatoko on her way to school. Hatoko noticed Misaki's new Angel, Hikaru, sticking out of her bag and asked if she could see it. After inquiring why Hikaru had no clothes, Hatoko wrapped Hikaru in her handkerchief so that she wouldn't be undressed anymore. Misaki was surprised by how much Hatoko knew about Angelic Layer, being so young, but looks can be deceiving when it comes to Hatoko.
Referred to as the "Miracle Kindergartener", Hatoko's Angelic Layer abilities are top notch. With her formidable Angel Suzuka, Hatoko is able to easily defeat her opponents in record time. Suzuka's speed on the layer is so fast, it's nearly impossible for her opponents to see her move, let alone engage her in a fight, before she knocks them out. Hatoko helps Misaki overcome her nervousness about competing in Angelic Layer, telling her to believe in herself and in Hikaru. It's easy to understand why Hatoko is already a champion once you've seen her in action.

Name: Ohjiro Mihara 
Birthday: October 20
Status: Champion of Kansai Regional games
Ohjiro is Icchan's younger step-brother. He has been involved with Angelic Layer for many years, in a large part because it was what brought him and Icchan together after their parents married each other. Ohjiro competes in Kobe and has been the champion of the Kansai Regional games, as well as being the runner-up in the national tournament for two consecutive years. He has a desperate desire to defeat Shuko Suzuhara's angel Athena to get over a childhood crush he had on her. His angel is Wizard. In the anime it is revealed that he is falling in love with Misaki. 

Name: Shuko Suzuhara
Birthday: November 28
Shuko is Misaki's mother and Shoko's elder sister. In the anime, it is explained that Shuko left a 5-year-old Misaki to be taken care of her grandparents under the guise of work, when in reality she was going to Tokyo in order to find a way to cure the neurological disease she had been inflicted with. This disease inhibits nerve signals from reaching to or from her legs. Ichiro Mihara was a doctor attempting to work with her to find a cure when the two started Angelic Layer as a way to do research and raise funds when their original research funding was cut off. Shuko, or "Shu" as she is called when playing Angelic Layer, is the undisputed champion with her angel Athena, having won each of the past three national championships. Over the past seven years, she has avoided meeting Misaki, afraid of what Misaki would think of her. In the manga, however, Shuko has no such disease and is merely extremely shy about socializing with those she loves. She also works for the company behind Angelic Layer.

Name: Sai Jounouchi
Birthday: Febuary 15
Sai Jounouchi, known as the "ice machine," started playing Angelic Layer at the request of her terminally ill sister Rin. Rin designed what the angel would look like, but died before Sai could create her. As a result, Sai states that her reason for playing Angelic Layer is "to become strong." Sai is from Kanagawa Prefecture and was the runner-up in the Kantō Regional games in the past year. She is friends with Kaede, who went to the same middle school as Sai. Her angel is Shirahime.

Name: Kaede saito
Birthday: October 14
Kaede is a quiet and wise girl from Kanagawa and is friends with Sai Jounouchi. Her parents divorced and she lives with her father. She received an angel egg as a gift from someone in her father's company. Her personality does not appear to be one suited for Angelic Layer, as pointed out by her father when he comments that he never believed that he would see Kaede compete in a fighting game. Despite this, she is very adept at Angelic Layer. She treats her angel, Blanche, as her own daughter.
